INFORMATION
The likely portal of entry for Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia refers to the anatomical site through which the pathogen is believed to have entered the bloodstream.
This is determined based on the following criteria (please, choose only one option):
- Skin/Soft tissues:
- Skin or soft tissue infection unrelated to surgical wound: Infection of the skin or soft tissues not related to a surgical wound.
- Skin or soft tissue infection related to surgical wound: Infection of the skin or soft tissues related to a surgical wound.
- Surgical Wound: Direct infection of a surgical wound with or without an associated prosthesis.
- Vascular catheter-related: Isolation of S. aureus from both the catheter tip and blood with identical susceptibility profiles, or a differential time to positivity of more than two hours between blood cultures from a peripheral vein and the catheter. Includes:
- Central vascular catheter (including PICC): Infection associated with a central vascular catheter, including peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC).
- Peripheral vascular catheter (including arterial line): Infection associated with a peripheral vascular catheter, including arterial lines.
- Other Implanted Vascular Device (pacemaker, stent, graft, etc.): Infection associated with other implanted vascular devices such as pacemakers, stents, or grafts.
- Other/Unknown; includes:
- Respiratory: Includes ventilator-associated pneumonia, hospital-acquired pneumonia, and community-acquired pneumonia.
- Genito-Urinary Tract: Infections related to per-urethral or supra-pubic urinary catheters, or recent urological or gynaecological/obstetric surgery within one week of bacteremia.
- Other Portal of Entry: Any other known portal of entry not specified above.
- Unknown: No probable portal could be determined based on available evidence.

Researchers with a sizeable cohort of patients with Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infection are invited to collaborate on the external validation of the FEN-AUREUS phenotypes and subphenotypes.
Eligible datasets should include the likely portal of entry, most of the variables required for phenotype and subphenotype assignment—as listed in this calculator—and relevant clinical outcomes, particularly mortality.
The FEN-AUREUS team can support the validation process by rapidly assigning the corresponding phenotype and subphenotype to each case.
